As Ms Clinton Steps On Africa, What Are The Expectations?

August 6th 2009 16:06

The name, Clinton, has for been synonymous with the White house. Both Mr and Mrs Clinton are daily followed by international press and when they weren't in office, they were still viewed as celebrities both in politics, and entertainment.

While Bill, no thanks to Monica, drew international attention and sympathy, Hillary rose to the international scene by the support she gave to an enstranged husband that got entangled in an international mess. That aside, they represent an international symbol of a marriage that works, especially when both are politicians.

When Obama crowned Hillary with the Secretary of State cap, we all expect a synergistic action that would be unleashed as a phenomenon on the global scene. While Obama has started delivering speeches all over the world, Hillary is catching up, starting with Africa.

As she has since touched down on Africa soil, the expectations are high.

To some, they see the visit as a launching pad to rejuvenate her dwindling political career using national resources. Although her aides would dispel that, the fact remains that a well packaged Hillary speech would attract attention from all and sundry, pushing Obama to the edge of his seat.

Africa is also significant as it could accord her the opportunity of winning several Africans that felt slighted by the "derogatory" words of Obama when he came calling. If Hillary can win Africans to her side, she stands the chance of winning their American brothers and sisters over.

We should also not overlook the Bill effect. Bill recently came back to the international scene by his strategic visit to North Korea. I'm only wondering why the timing? I don't expect it to be a mere coincidence for both of them to be in the news, except something is in the plans.

I like America, its people, and most important, its politics. As an African, and Nigerian however, I welcome, on behalf of my other African counterparts, American Secretary of State, Bill's sweet heart and the champion of the female cause, Hillary Clinton to Africa and hope she enjoy the cuisines that prepared Obama for the challenges ahead.
